GUIDED HISTORY WALK IN PETWORTH PARK
Saturday August 22nd 2.00 p.m.
This walk in the Park takes up to two hours, the pace is easy and involves only one steep climb. We will see and hear about all the main historic sites and how the Park has grown and its use changed over the centuries and the personalities who have shaped it. The National Trust are no longer offering history walks so this will be your only opportunity this year.
From flint blades on Arbour Hill going back 8000 years, the early deer park, the land grab by King Henry V111th together with his hunting lodge, the contested enclosure of the 8th Earl of Northumberland, the creation of the Capability Brown landscape and lost roads, why the House abuts the Town rather than being in the middle of the Park, the destruction of parts of Petworth Town & Tillington to enlarge the Park, the Georgian shooting range, the Park’s role in WW11, including the Dieppe Raid and D Day, the post war Polish camp and bringing us right up to date, the change in landscape from the abortive Petworth by pass and the Great Storm of 1987 – & more!
Everyone, members and non members of the Society welcome including dogs, kept on a short lead. It will be fun, informative and an opportunity to make new friends!
No charge for members of the Petworth Society, £5 for non members – refundable if you join on the day.
There is a limit on numbers, so if you would like to join please book online – go to https://Petworthsociety.co.uk or register your interest by emailing Bev Sewell at Info@petworthsociety.co.uk.
To avoid going into the National Trust pay area, meet in the Cow Yard at Petworth House – 1.45 for 2.00 o’clock, Do NOT go to Church Lodge entrance to Petworth House.
The entrance to the Cow Yard, through open gates, is 100 yards down North Street, on the left, from St Mary’s Parish Church.
