Please join us on Thursday October 17th at Leconfield Hall (7 pm) for a talk on:

GWENDA MORGAN – WOOD ENGRAVER OF PETWORTH presented by Richard Hodgson of Kevis House Gallery in Petworth.

Admission Charge £5 for members £7 for non members.  Doors open at 6.30 pm.  Prior booking not required.  Refreshments available.

Gwenda Morgan (1908-1991) lived in Petworth throughout her entire life.  Her wood engravings are now regarded as being among the finest created in the 20th century.

Her engravings are now held in the collections of museums worldwide. Kevis House Gallery holds the largest private collection of Morgan’s original prints.  Many of the scenes in her illustrations were based on landscapes and buildings in and around the Petworth area and the neighbouring South Downs.

Many in Petworth were unaware of her reputation. Yet despite her private and modest manner she contributed to the town in several ways, more lastingly with a very generous bequest to the Leconfield Hall, which together with Heritage Funding money made possible the major refurbishment of the Hall.

Her wartime diary of her experiences as a Land Girl  was published by a private press in 2002, with an introduction by Peter Jerrome.

Richard Hodgson of Kevis House Gallery in Petworth will illustrate his talk with examples of Gwenda’s work as well as some family photographs.
