The first Petworth Society talk of the 2025 season will see Miles Costello taking the audience on a tour of the ancient streets of Victorian Petworth.
Mainly the work of the Petworth Photographer Walter Kevis, most of the images will not have been seen before on the Leconfield Hall cinema screen.
Starting in a remarkably empty and motor less Market Square and stretching out along the warren of mediaeval thoroughfares that make up the town centre, the audience will be transported through Petworth during what some questionably describe as its heyday.
An important record of what is now becoming our distant past the photographs portray the town during the third quarter of the nineteenth and the early years of the twentieth century when many ancient buildings were replaced by those that we are familiar with today.
Watch carefully and you may even see your own home as it was well over a century ago!
