An Englishmans Home is his Castle tells the story of the transition from Baronial strongholds in to English Dtately Homes describing the various stages of development along the way and the people who lived in them. From Notman Motte and Bailey Castles through to the Faux castles of the Victorian period and introducing some of the most visited Castles and Stately homes in Sussex as an illustration.
Our speaker, Richard Shenton, is a Petworth Society member and also a Blue Badge Tourist Guide for Southern England. When not conducting tours or giving talks, Richard enjoys doing voluntary work with the nearby Wey and Arun Canal Trust and in his spare time can be found attending local History Society walks and also doing crossword puzzles over a cup of coffee and a slice of cake.
