Saturday 20th September two hour archaeology walk in Petworth Park starting at 1.00 pm. Free to paid up members of the Society, £5 to non members
Petworth House and Park has a rich history as revealed by “digs” and surveys over recent years, which have revealed neolithic flint blades, bronze age field boundaries, Henry’8th hunting lodge/banqueting house, the remains of the Tudor Petworth House, the lost stable blocks of the 16 and 17 hundreds and a lot more in between.
Last year the National Trust hosted an archaeological dig as part of the “Henry VIII on Tour” project. The dig aimed to uncover the estate’s history, particularly its connection to King Henry VIII, who is known to have gone hunting in the Park, The dig also explored the evolution of the landscape over 900 years, from common land to Henry VIII’s hunting park, the lost formal gardens of the Duke of Somerset, and finally “Capability” Brown’s changes to the landscape which have made archaeology challenging!
The history of particular sites will be explained and visitors will be told about some of the fascinating finds. The walk will be led by Henry Wakeford, a life long Petworth resident and enthusiastic amateur archaeologist who has been involved in many of the digs in the Park.
