Beating the Parish Bounds Walk
Sunday 10th May 2026
How time flies! It is almost twenty years since the Petworth Society last did a ‘Beating of the Parish Bounds Walk’, and with Rogationtide approaching it seems fitting to once again continue the important tradition of blessing the fields while establishing the parish boundaries. You can join us for what will be a short and quite leisurely walk taking in a part of the southern boundary by the river Rother. The walk will also include a section of the old Petworth to Midhurst railway embankment not generally accessible to the public. Length of walk is about 1 -2 hours.
Parking is limited so where possible car sharing is preferable, and walkers should meet at the north end (public lavatories) of the main Petworth town centre car park at 2 pm on Sunday May 10th. For the more energetic it is quite possible to walk from the town and anyone doing so should aim to be at Rotherbridge Farm by 2pm,.
Miles Costello will lead the walk and will give a brief introduction on the history and meaning of “Beating the Bounds”.
Everyone, members and non members of the Society and children & dogs welcome
No charge for paid up members of the Petworth Society, £5 for non members but waived for those who join the Society on the day..
Because of limited parking at the Farm, it would be useful if we had an idea of numbers, so if you would like to join, you can book online at https://Petworthsociety.co.uk or register your interest by emailing Bev Sewell at Info@Petworth Society.co.uk.
