In this fully illustrated talk, Petworth resident John Fitch will explore the history of this fascinating subject.
Gas was brought to Petworth in 1836 when a gas works was built on Station Road.
Coal was initially transported by barge to nearby Coultershaw wharf and later by rail to the town’s station gods yard.
This effort was very much supported by the 3rd Earl Egremont, to whom the townspeople later gave a monument in gratitude, at the north end of East Street.
Gas lighting began in London in the early 19th century. By 1823, gas lighting was becoming more widespread in towns and cities across Britain, as it was safer, cheaper, and brighter than alternatives like oil lamps and candles, but to many Petworth “locals” it would have been seen as the coming of a brave new world.
