HISTORY WALK IN PETWORTH TOWN
SATURDAY 16th August 3.00 p.m.
NB: THIS IS A CHANGE FROM THE PREVIOUSLY ADVERTISED TIME
Free for paid up members of the Society. £5 for non members
This walking tour of the Town will take about one hour plus. Whether you live in the Town and think you know it or you are an outsider, it will be a fascinating insight into the Town‘s history and how it has been fundamentally influenced over the years by Petworth House.
From the parish Church we will walk down Lombard Street, through the Market Square and Golden Square and then the High Street to learn about its many pubs. Then to the site of the windmill, then to the remains of the notorious House of Correction. Then to an overview of the Shimmings Valley and signs of medieval farming. Then the story of the rise, fall and rise again of Catholic Church and then back into the Town centre. Learn of these and many other interesting details of Petworth’s history through its buildings.
Everyone, members and non members of the Society welcome including dogs, kept on a short lead. It will be fun, informative and an opportunity to make new friends!
The walk will be led by Ian Yonge who leads many such walks for the National Trust.
For safety reasons, there is a limit on numbers of 12 so to be sure of a place please book online – go to https://Petworthsociety.co.uk – or register your interest by emailing Bev Sewell at Info@Petworth Society.co.uk.
