FREE HISTORY WALK IN PETWORTH PARK  SAT 15th June 2.00 p.m

The “regular” history walk in the Park takes two hours and involves some steep climbs. This walk will take about one hour with only one moderate uphill stretch. We will nevertheless see and hear about all the main historic sites and how the Park has grown and changed its use over the centuries.

We will learn about flint blades on Arbour Hill going back 8000 years,  the creation of a Deer Park and remains of Henry 8th’s hunting lodge, the contested enclosure of the 8th Earl of Northumberland, the creation of the Capability Brown landscape,  why the House abuts the Town rather than being in the middle of the Park, the destruction of parts of Petworth Town &  Tillington to enlarge the Park, the Victorian shooting range, the Park’s role in WW11 (including the Dieppe Raid and D Day), the post war Polish camp and, bringing us right up to date,  the change in landscape from the abortive Petworth by pass – & more!

Everyone, members and non members of the Society  welcome including dogs kept on a short lead. It will be fun, informative and an opportunity to make new friends!

There is no charge as we will not be going into the National Trust pay area. There is however a limit on numbers, so if you would like to join please book  online –  go to https://Petworthsociety.co.uk or register your interest by emailing Bev Sewell at  Info@Petworth Society.co.uk.

Meeting point is in the Cow Yard at Petworth House – 1.45 for 2.00 o’clock, Saturday 15th of June.  Do NOT attempt go to Church Lodge entrance to Petworth House.

Entrance to the Cow Yard is from North Street. The entrance to the Cow Yard is 100 yards down North Street from St Mary’s Parish Church.  Contact walk leader Ian  on 07825 198675 if uncertain.
