VISIT TO PITSHILL HOUSE AND GARDENS

Thursday 12th of June 2.00 pm,  2 hour tour of the Georgian house and gardens followed by tea,  courtesy of the owner Charles Pearson who will explain his restoration of the  once neglected house and garden.

Pitshill House stands in a spectacular position with views down a shallow combe to the south and views from the upper rooms to the north. The first building on the site of which anything is known was built in the early 17th century. The present building which replaced an older house, was begun by William Mitford in 1760 and completed by his son, William Mitford in 1794. The architect John Upton, surveyor to the Earl of Egremont.

When the Pearson family purchased Pitshill House in 1998, years of neglect had taken its toll, and poorly judged building work allowing decay of the buildings and a return of the formal grounds to scrub. The restoration was to reinstate the presence the house once had in the landscape along with the surviving contemporary buildings; a Shell House, a Prospect Tower, an Ice House and two picturesque drive Lodges.

NB:  This tour is only for paid up Society members and pre booking only.  Numbers are limited.
